Therollerchaindesignreducesfrictioncomparedtosimplerdesigns,resultinginhigherefficiencyandlesswear.Theoriginalpowertransmissionchainvarietieslackedrollersandbushings,withboththeinnerandouterplatesheldbypinswhichdirectlycontactedthesprocketteethhoweverthisconfigurationexhibitedextremelyrapidwearofboththesprocketteeth,andtheplateswheretheypivotedonthepins.Thisproblemwaspartiallysolvedbythedevelopmentofbushedchains,withthepinsholdingtheouterplatespassingthroughbushingsorsleevesconnectingtheinnerplates.Thisdistributedthewearovera greaterareahowevertheteethofthesprocketsstillworemorerapidlythanisdesirable,fromtheslidingfrictionagainstthebushings.TheadditionofrollerssurroundingthebushingsleevesofthecZheJiang dprovidedrollingcontactwiththeteethofthesprocketsresultinginexcellentresistancetowearofbothsprocketsandchainaswell.Thereisevenverylowfriction,aslongasthechainissufficientlylubricated.Continuous,clear,lubricationofrollerchainsisofprimaryimportanceforefficientoperationaswellascorrecttensioning. MotorcyclechainlubricationChainsoperatingathighspeedscomparabletothoseonmotorcyclesshouldbeusedinconjunctionwithanoilbath.Formodernmotorcyclesthisisnotpossible,andmostmotorcyclechainsrununprotected.Thus,motorcyclechainstendtowearveryquicklyrelativetootherapplications.Theyaresubjecttoextremeforcesandareexposedtorain,grime,sandandroadsalt.
